Letter of Reference from Mary Eagen, RN
April 2013
I have known Dr. Tom Royer for 14 years. I worked with him for 13 years
in CHRISTUS HEALTH as Chief Nurse Officer in Corpus Christi, Texas and
then as Regional Chief Nurse Officer in the Texas Southeast Region. Recently
I had the privilege to work with Dr. Tom as Executive Vice President and
Chief Nurse Officer at Parkland Hospital in Dallas Texas while he was
the Interim CEO at Parkland Hospital and Healthcare System. He truly is
the most outstanding and dynamic healthcare leader that I have ever worked
with in my professional career. He created clear goals for each and every
organization with metrics to monitor their success. Working with strong
teams he recruited and developed, he moved the organization forward, in
a most rapid fashion, on a Journey to Excellence.
Dr. Tom is truly a visionary leader and is as comfortable in the Boardroom
or rounding in the hospital or leading an emergency medical relief team
in Haiti following the Hurricane. While at CHRISTUS he was committed to
developing infrastructures that support and embody exceptional nursing
practice and clinical integration. CHRISTUS “Journey to Excellence”
that he developed could be achieved by following the nursing framework
provided by the Magnet designation program and this structure was instrumental
in helping two hospitals in the Texas Southeast region achieve Magnet
Designation before he completed over 12 years in his leadership role,
then becoming the CEO Emeritus of CHRISTUS.
Tom is one of the most gifted and talented physicians that I have ever
known. He genuinely is above all, a tireless patient advocate. He fully
understands the complex workings of healthcare organizations and is a
change agent in moving organizations to excellence in quality and providing
patient safety. He is committed to developed outstanding leaders in healthcare
who, like him, can lead transformation processes to address successfully
the challenges facing the healthcare industry today.
Sincerely,
Mary K Eagen, MS, MA, RN, NEA-BC
SVP and Chief Nursing Officer
Parkland Hospital and Health System
